How Do You Respond?

More words of wisdom:

Life is ten percent what happens to you
and ninety percent how you respond to it.
– Lou Holtz

People push our buttons. There are just certain people that have hurt us, cheated us or are dead set on making our lives miserable. When they are on the attack, how do you respond?

How do you want to respond?

People think I am a very calm person. People pick up on that I am a very happy person. I’m sure there are some who read my words and think, oh, doesn’t she just think she knows everything? I expect some of that. I appreciate the words of gratitude some send my way for the information I share.

When it comes to toxic people, there was a time when I seemed to be a magnet for toxic relationships. Thankfully, after attending an anger management program, I learned to identify the toxic people in my life and end those relationships. It was hard. Many of those toxic people then attacked me. I stood up to them. Probably for the first time in my life. I make much better choices about relationships now.

I have been asked about forgiveness. I do forgive people, but that doesn’t mean that I have to invite them in my life and allow them to abuse me. You can move beyond dysfunctional relationships and only allow yourself to be surrounded by people who make you feel good and bring positive energy into your world. That is what I try to do now.

When toxic people attack, there is a choice to make. You can continue in the unhealthy patterns of old, or you can set a new path. If you want to move into a more positive life, it cannot happen when you are surrounded by negativity. It will be hard at first, but the more you refuse to be pulled into a toxic relationship, the more you will enjoy being free of that negativity.
